Boreray is an island off the north-west coast of North Uist in the county of Inverness. It is approximately 1½ miles long by half a mile wide. The 'Old Statistical Account', xiii, 303, states that, at the date of publication (1794), the Macleans of Boreray had been in possession of the island for several generations on account of service to the family of Lord Macdonald by which the Macleans had 'obtained, for the small yearly rent of L.12 Sterling, a very long lease...57 years of which are to run after the present possessor's demise.' |
