Diary of voyage of Alexander Purdie from Greenock to Melbourne as a third-class passenger on board the sailing-ship, 'Loch Garry'. Subjects discussed include: his diet and health; leisure pursuits, including celebrations to mark the Queen's birthday and crossing the Equator; religious services; the treatment of first-class passengers; restlessness at the length of the voyage; and daily distances covered, with bearings. The entry for July 21 mentions that one of the passengers was 'Mr Mason, ex MP'. Includes table of daily latitudes and longditudes and distances covered by the 'Loch Garry' for period May 7-July 23. The diarist was the father of the donor, Dr Purdie. He is described in the diary as a craftsman and seems to have been a relatively young man when he sailed, since he refers at various times to his parents and brothers and sisters. His home town was possibly Paisley (see the entry for June 23). The vessel on which he departed, the 'Loch Garry' (registered 1875), was a two-deck sailing-ship belonging to Glasgow Shipping Company. Its master was probably one J Horne. |
