The A8 road between Glasgow and Edinburgh was promoted in 1923 as a means of easing unemployment in Scotland. Work was begun at the Glasgow end in August 1924 and at Edinburgh in November of that year. The engineers faced a variety of difficulties in constructing the road but were also able to realign or reconstruct parts of the existing roads that ran between the two cities. The estimated cost of the road came to over £2,200,000 and the road ran to over 39 miles. John A Wallace, the uncle of the donor, was involved in the project from 1925 until its completion in 1932 and acted in the capacity of resident or joint resident engineer on a number of the sections. He is identified in some of the photographs grouped under GD1/1102/5. For related plans from the same donor, see RHP89433-45. |
