Although the foundation-stone of the Old (now HM General) Register House in Edinburgh was laid on 27 June 1774, plans for the building's construction had been discussed for a decade and more. James Douglas, Earl of Morton, was Lord Clerk Register (1760-1768), the official in charge of the administration of the Scottish archives. The recipient of the letter, William Mure, a Baron of Exchequer (1761-1776) was one of the Crown officials charged with financial responsibility for the choice of site. |
