The diary and other documents listed below were probably the property of Henry John Allan, an East Indian Company soldier. Allan joined the Company as a military cadet in 1845 and was a lieutenant with the 9th Regiment of the Bengal Native Infantry when the great Indian Mutiny broke out in 1857; he was promoted to captain in March 1860 and retired from the service in September 1862. There is some evidence to suggest that he was a relation, possibly the brother of William H Allan of Allanbank, near Lauder in Berwickshire. |
