history |
Sir John Campbell of Glenorchy, MP for County of Argyll, 1669-74, obtained, as chief creditor of George, 6th Earl of Caithness, a redeemable disposition of his whole estate and earldom. When he received crown confirmation of, and sasine on, this disposition, and on death of the 6th earl, Campbell of Glenorchy claimed the title of Earl of Caithness, although this title was also assumed by the late earl's heir male. In 1677 Campbell received a charter of both the lands and title and invaded Caithness in order to enforce his title. However Charles II recognised the rights of the Sinclair family and in 1681 Glenorchy relinquished the title of Earl of Caithness and was created Earl of Breadalbane and Holland. (See entry for that family in Burke's Peerage.) |
