Letter from Jo[hn] Scott of Lees, writing from Midhurst, Sussex, to Mrs Margaret Scott of Horsliehill, nr. Hawick.
Presents his 'most humble tenders of filial and most affectionat friendship and service'. Awaits an answer to his letters written as 'your petitioner at the holy altar'. Expatiates, with biblical and classical allusions, on the virtues of friendship.
In a postscript, sends his respects to 'all no false bretheren true lovers of Christs holy Episcopal Church ... I hope to preach an excellent sermon at Old Hassendean kirk on these words: "The way which they call heresie so worship I the God of my fathers" etc in the year 1741'. Complains that [the laird of] Burnhead has not replied to his letters demanding 24 years teind and rent. 'There is roguery at the posthouse or plain knavery at the Langholm Castle ... If he dislike being nicknamed Alexander the Coppersmith he must be sure not to deserve the title'. |
