George Cook (1772-1845), younger son of John Cook, professor of Moral Philosophy, St Andrews, graduated MA, St Andrews, 1790; licensed by presbytery there and ordained, 1795; DD, St Andrews, 1808. Prominent in General Assembly deliberations and leader of Moderate party. Opposed Dr Chalmers' Evangelical party in period preceding Disruption. Elected Moderator, 1825; appointed to Chair of Moral Philosophy, St Andrews, 1828. Appointed Dean of Order of the Thistle, 1830 and held office until his death on 13 May 1845.
