This society was created from the remnants of the Edinburgh and Leith Commercial Travellers' Benevolent Association, which functioneld for seventeen years until its demise in 1909. The Association had been formed to help commercial travellers in financial distress through ill-health or redundancy. Members who enjoyed good health and steady employment gained no return for their subscriptions except in the form of a funeral allowance paid to friends or acquaintances on the member's death. The new Society was registered on 28 March, 1911, under the Friendly Societies Act of 1896. It fulfilled the old obligations and also gave members a return in the form of an 'apportionment' of surplus funds. Members' accounts were started and surplus amounts, proportionate to the number of shares held, were distributed into these by the trustees at the end of each financial year. The Society was dissolved in 1988. |
