The Wardrope family from Ladykirk, Berwickshire emigrated to Canada in 1834. Thomas Wardrope, who had previously been the master at Ladykirk parish school, bought and farmed land in Ontario. A licentiate of the Church of Scotland, he was later the minister of Nairn (now Strabane) Presbyterian Church, Ontario, from 1847 until 1855. Three of his sons, Thomas, David (the author) and James also became ministers in Canada. Thomas, the eldest son, was amongst the first graduates of Queen's University in Kingston. He taught at Dalhousie Grammar School, now Lisgar Collegiate, Ottawa and was later the minister of Knox Presbyterian Church, also in Ottawa. |
