Sir James Hope (1614-61) of Hopetoun was the youngest son of Sir Thomas Hope of Craighall (1573-1646), lord advocate. He acquired lucrative mines in Leadhills through his marriage to the heiress Anne Foulis.Their descendants acquired estates in West Lothian, Midlothian, East Lothian (Ormiston and Luffness), Fife (Rankeillor, Rosyth etc) and Dumfriesshire. His son, Sir John Hope (1650-82)purchased the lands of Abercorn, but died before he could complete his plans for building Hopetoun House, which were fulfilled by his wife
Charles Hope (1681-1742) was created first Earl of Hopetoun on 15 April 1703. He purchased Craighall in Fife from Sir Thomas Bruce Hope of Craighall in 1729.
The Scottish estates of the Johnston family, Marquesses of Annandale were inherited by the 3rd Earl of Hopetoun (1741-1816) and on his death they passed to his daughter Anne while the Hopetoun estates passed to his half-brother Major General John Hope (1765-1823) who succeeded as 4th Earl. He had a distinguished military career, particularly during the Peninsular War.
The 7th Earl, Sir John Hope (1860-1908) was created 1st Marquess of Linlithgow on 27 October 1902 after a lifetime of service as Governor General of Victoria, Austrlia and Governor General of the Commonwealth of Australia. He also served as Scretary for Scotland in 1905. His son, Sir Victor (1887-1952) served as Lord of the Admiralty, 1922-4 and was Viceroy and Governor General of India, 1936-43.
