Commission signed by Warren Hastings and Edward Wheeler, appointing John McPherson as major of infantry in the service of the honourable united East India Company on the Bengal establishment, 22 January 1781.

Account due by Colonel Allan Macpherson to Kn. Riccard, for silver, paid 10 October 1787. Items include candlesticks, a strong double plated husk pattern teapot with solid silver beads at £3.10s, a bronze balloon tea urn with inserted tube heater at £2.6s, cutlery, all engraved with crests and mottoes, along with a mahogany knifecase bordered with rosewood with a large silver pierced escutcheon shield and ring star ornament etc., to contain 24 pair of table knives and forks, 12 pair of desert ditto, 12 table spoons, 12 desert ditto, 2 gravy spoons, 1 marrow spoon, 1 fish trowel and 2 pair of carvers; two smaller knife cases, along with 2 furbelowed tureen ladles, a silver guggler and some other items. The receipt is signed for Mrs Kn. Riccard by Thomas Simpson, and the bill amounts in all to £126.8s.

Copy deed of manumission by William Macpherson of plantation Rising Sun on the west coast of the colony of Berbice, of his black female slave, Harriot, formerly named Countess, the property of James Fraser of Golden Fleece, purchased and paid for by said William, her mulatto children Eliza, Matilda and Allan, 1 October 1810. Containing copy receipt for the said Harriot, at a price of £120 stg., 31 March 1807. With the original receipt.

Extract will of James Macpherson of Fludyer St., Westminster, Putney Common in Surrey, of Belleville, Inverness-shire, M.P. for Camelford, 10 September 1793. Bequests include £1000 to defray expenses of publication of the originals of the poems of Ossian, this article being void if the poems were published before his death; £500 for a plain monument on top of Druimintaple or any other elevated place near Belleville. With codicils. Proved 26 March 1796.

Accepts recipient's offer - 'I wish with all my heart that every two of the clan who may have differed in opinion, would be guided by and would act from the same principles you and I have done'. With a bill of exchange for £30 stg.
Letter from James Stewart to Colonel Macpherson, Blairgowrie. Glasclune, Sunday 3 o'clock afternoon (endorsed 30 August 1789). Regrets he cannot call that afternoon; his wife has their one horse in Argyllshire and he himself cannot walk owing to 'an old sore had upwards of 40 years which I gote on Culoden Moor'.
D Macpherson of Cluny to Colonel Allan Macpherson. Cluny, 14 June 1806. Mrs Macpherson was safely delivered of a fine boy that morning, and mother and the little stranger are as well as can be expected.

Including description of a meeting of the Highland Society in Edinburgh, 28 June, when they saw a model of a reaping machine made by a Mr Smith presented to the Society; opinion of Henry Mackenzie that the assimulation of weights and measures throughout Britain would produce considerable benefit; continuation of collection of materials for a gaelic dictionary. View from Calton Hill, 26 June; new church in Charlotte Sq., - 'it is not intended to give it any spire but finish it with a dome similar to the Register Office. I think the appearance will be very heavy - it is said a spire would cost £3000'; visit to the farming and implement manufactory in the Shotts Iron Company's premises in Greenside Lane, head of Leith Walk.
Letter from George Kinloch. Kinloch, 22 November 1815. Would be grateful for 15-16 flakes 'as the dyke to which I trusted to one side, merely serves to amuse the sheep in leaping over it'.
Letter from W[arren Hastings] to Captain McPherson. Fort William, 17 December 1780. Has heard that the Maratta forces at Cuttac have assembled on the road to Bengal; 'I believe that they have no actual design to pass our borders, yet as it is possible, I advise you to be upon your guard, and prepared to receive them. At the same time I recommend that you make as little shew as possible of surprise, and keep this letter secret, for fear of giving public alarm'. Damaged. With copy reply, 22 December 1780, reporting that it is believed that Chimnajee is to march in a few days to Bengal.
