The National Cooperage Federation was established in 1919. It is a national organisation, its members being found in all parts of Britain. In Scotland there were a number of local organisations, one in Glasgow, the West of Scotland Cooperage Association and one based in Edinburgh representing cooperage businesses in the East and North of Scotland. Representatives from these associations were also members of the National Cooperage Federation.
The Federation began during the period of restoration after the First World War. The aims of the organisation were to promote and protect the interests of employers in the cooperage trade. The members met to discuss economic conditions affecting their business, government policies affecting the industry, relations between the industry and the brewing and distilling industries and also negotiating with employee trade unions.
In more recent years there has been a decline in the cooperage industry due to many large breweries using metal barrels. Many English cooperages have ceased to operate but those in Scotland have managed to stay in business supplying the whisky distillers although many private firms are now partly or wholly owned by large distilling companies.
